So many indie loose powder/mineral makeup businesses have gone out of business as the indie makeup marketplace has made a big shift towards manufactured products. Unlike other indie businesses, it's come to be accepted that indie makeup includes any business that's not owned by a mother company. Third party, private label, mass manufactured, small scale manufactured and handmade products are all accepted as indie under this umbrella. As an old school handcrafting indie, this definition will never set right with me. I believe that indie cosmetic products only encompass handcrafting and small-scale production by other small-scale producers. The spirit of indie IS handmade, handcrafted, artisan-crafted. Anything else is a niche or specialty product that's offered by a small business, but that's where the indie correlation stops. Mass manufactured products from China stamped with a company's name simply aren't the same as handcrafted indie products. They're worlds apart. And their acceptance as indie is a big reason why so many small, handcrafting indies are closing up shop. Why try anymore? Is how many have ended up feeling.
